I get asked this frequently because of my years working multiple internships, jobs and part-time gigs in the very popular industry. I have taken this experience and condensed into 3 questions.
You must answer yes to these three questions before heading into the sports industry. I am sure Rudy did too!
1. Are you willing to network and keep in contact with everyone you meet in the sports industry?
It’s a closed-knit family and you will quickly see how small it is. This is vitally important. The best way to get started is to attend a sports management program known for its people in the business – Ohio University is the best. Rudy made his network and kept in touch.
2. Are you willing to work and live anywhere, even if it is North Dakota State?
No offense to NDSU, but it’s cold and who wants to live there? It could be you if that is the opportunity that is available in college athletics or in an independent minor league baseball franchise. You must go where the job is. You will not be able to pick where you want to live. Rudy sacrificed his living conditions.
3. Are you willing to work long hours, nights, weekends, holidays for little, minimal, low or no pay?
This is where the passion will be tested. Eventually life will happen and the mystique of working in the industry wears off. Rudy again sacrificed in many ways.
If you answer yes without hesitation, then get moving like Rudy, if not, then just be a fan and watch this movie clip over and over like I do.
