Last night we held our weekly 5 0′Clock Career Network event where job seekers can connect to employment specialists to discuss job search strategies and techniques.

Last night’s speaker discussed the importance of differentiating yourself from all of the other job seekers and she also made a profound statement…

Many job seekers stay in positions even though they may not be happy because they feel the job market is too difficult to get another job.

I just do not understand why someone would be dissatisfied in their job and yet stay with it and not attempt to find other employment. Help me understand. This is does not make any since. Are people settling? Have they given up? Are they still taking risks?

We must help these folks who feel hopeless in their current employment find other ways to get excited about their careers and continue to move the region forward.

One way we can do this is for these people to come to our 5 0′Clock Career Network event each Monday in downtown Roanoke. For more info and to attend, email me.

It is a person’s aversion to change. Everyone has it but some are more entrenched than others. Just last night during a teen program I was facilitating a 16 year old stated “I hate change and will do anything to avoid it.” This is a strong statement for a 16 year old since I can’t get adults to admit it.

Most people will not switch jobs because there is no guarantee there is a long term benefit. The risk is too high for them.

Also, many people are surrounded by others that talk them out of change. A type of “negative evangelism.”

A great book to help people escape this trap is “The Dream Giver” by Bruce Wilkinson. The book summary fits this situation well: “This compelling modern-day parable tells the story of Ordinary, who dares to leave the Land of Familiar to pursue his Big Dream.”

Thanks for the feedback… I have read most of Bruck Wilkinson’s books including the Dreamgiver… He is a good author.

I will add another extended post on this later…

The biggest reason people stay in crumby jobs is the fear of losing benefits and the feeling of being a hostage to their financial commitments. And yes, the perception is that there’s really nothing else out there…
