The biggest reason people stay in crumby jobs is the fear of losing benefits and the feeling of being a hostage to their financial commitments. And yes, the perception is that there's really nothing else out there...

Thanks for the feedback... I have read most of Bruck Wilkinson's books including the Dreamgiver... He is a good author.

I will add another extended post on this later...

It is a person's aversion to change. Everyone has it but some are more entrenched than others. Just last night during a teen program I was facilitating a 16 year old stated "I hate change and will do anything to avoid it." This is a strong statement for a 16 year old since I can't get adults to admit it.

Most people will not switch jobs because there is no guarantee there is a long term benefit. The risk is too high for them.

Also, many people are surrounded by others that talk them out of change. A type of "negative evangelism."

A great book to help people escape this trap is "The Dream Giver" by Bruce Wilkinson. The book summary fits this situation well: "This compelling modern-day parable tells the story of Ordinary, who dares to leave the Land of Familiar to pursue his Big Dream."
